Yoga towels are a vital accessory for your yoga practice, especially if you're a
travelling yoga practitioner. They can make your yoga practice more pleasant and hygienic in many
ways.
Like any form of physical activity, yoga can cause your body to heat up especially
when done in a studio with many other people. The result is that your hands and feet become sweaty and cause
you to slip and slide while doing certain asanas. Not only does this hamper your practice, it can also be
dangerous.
What's more there's the hygienic factor to consider. Sweaty hands, feet and face are
unpleasant under any circumstances but being in a public setting makes it worse.
The easy and practical answer is to use a yoga towel. Having your own yoga towel on
hand constantly can help you stay fresh and dry. It's not just something you use to wipe yourself
down but it forms a vital component in your collection of yoga accessories.
Another great use of the yoga towel is to put it as a hygienic layer on top of your
yoga mat. The towel feels soft and so much nicer than a rubber mat. It can make practicing your asanas much
more comfortable. Another great benefit of doing this is that it reduces wear and tear on your mat and
extends its life.
Finally, the yoga towel is perfect to wipe down your mat before packing it away at
the end of your yoga session. This reduces the risk of mould forming and extends the life of your mat (as
well as helping it to keep smelling good).
Most yoga towels are made to sizes that fit on standard yoga mats (24' x 68').
Though you can use a standard or beach towel, it's better to get a special yoga towel that you use just for
your practice. Having dedicated yoga accessories helps deepen your practice and you can be sure that your
towel fits your mat perfectly.
As for the choice of colors, you can go for a towel with soothing and relaxing
colors such as green or light blue or more energizing hues such as red depending on your mood. Or get one of
each so you'll have a yoga towel for any occasion. Perhaps you prefer relaxing colors at home and brighter
colors at the studio for power yoga, for example.
In any event, it's best to get two yoga towels as you'll always have on to use when
the other's being washed.
If you're serious about your yoga practice, you may want to invest in a speciality
item such as an eco friendly yoga towel.
